spike
Ⅰ.
spike [1] NOUN 1) a thin, pointed piece of metal or wood. 2) each of several metal points set into the sole of a sports shoe to prevent slipping. 3) chiefly Brit. a pointed metal rod fixed to a base, used for impaling and storing notes or papers. 4) a sharp increase in magnitude or intensity.
VERB 1) impale on or pierce with or as with a spike. 2) form into or cover with sharp points. 3) put an end to (a plan or undertaking). 4) informal surreptitiously lace (drink or food) with alcohol or a drug. 5) increase and then decrease sharply.
ORIGIN perhaps from Low German, Dutch spiker, related to SPOKE(Cf. ↑spoke); sense 3 of the verb derives from the editorial practice of rejecting submitted news stories by filing them on a spike.
Ⅱ.
spike [2] NOUN Botany a flower cluster formed of many flower heads attached directly to a long stem.
ORIGIN originally denoting an ear of corn: from Latin spica.
